Where to Stay in Geneva

Lakeside city of diplomacy, in French-speaking Switzerland

Geneva (Genève) sits at the southwestern tip of Switzerland, where the Rhône flows out of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), almost entirely surrounded by France. It's the country's second-largest city and the main hub of French-speaking Switzerland — a cosmopolitan, international place known as the "Peace Capital," home to the European headquarters of the UN, the Red Cross and the CERN physics laboratory.

Here's what to know before booking: how to get there (including from the airport), when to go, and where to stay — with a live price comparison to find your room.

Getting to Geneva

Geneva Airport sits right at the edge of the city, and a train links it to the main station (Genève-Cornavin) in about 7 minutes. The station connects to the Swiss rail network and, via French TGV, to Paris, Lyon and beyond. From Zurich it's roughly 2h50 by direct train. Around town, an excellent network of trams and buses (and the little yellow Mouettes shuttle boats across the lake) makes getting around easy — many hotels include a free transport card.

When to visit

What to do

Jet d'Eau & the lakefront

Geneva's signature sight: the Jet d'Eau shoots water about 140 metres into the air from the lake and is visible across the city. You can walk out along the stone jetty for a close (and possibly damp) view. The tree-lined lakefront promenades, the Flower Clock (Horloge Fleurie) and the English Garden are all nearby.

The Old Town (Vieille Ville)

Geneva's historic heart rises on a hill above the Rhône — cobbled streets, the St. Pierre Cathedral (you can climb the towers for a panorama), the lively Bourg-de-Four square on the site of a Roman forum, and the Reformation Wall in the Parc des Bastions.

International Geneva — UN & CERN

The Palais des Nations (European UN headquarters) offers guided visits, with the striking Broken Chair sculpture out front. Northwest of the city, CERN — the European physics laboratory and birthplace of the World Wide Web — has public exhibitions.

The lake & beyond

Boat cruises run on Lake Geneva, from short loops to longer trips toward Lausanne and Montreux. Geneva is also a common base for day trips across the border to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in France, and to the medieval lakeside village of Yvoire. Mont Salève, Geneva's local mountain, is just over the French border with a cable car for panoramic views.
