Where to Stay in Lucerne

Medieval lakeside city, gateway to Pilatus and Rigi

Lucerne (Luzern in German) sits where Lake Lucerne meets the River Reuss, in the heart of central Switzerland. It's a compact, walkable city built around a well-preserved medieval old town — and one of the easiest places in the country to base yourself, with the lake on your doorstep and two of Switzerland's most popular mountains, Pilatus and Rigi, within a short trip.

Here's what to know before booking: how to get there, when to go, and where the city is laid out — followed by a live price comparison to find a room for your dates.

Getting to Lucerne

Lucerne is one of the best-connected cities in Switzerland. The main station, Bahnhof Luzern, sits right on the lake at the edge of the old town — you step off the train and you're already in the centre. From Zurich it's about 40 minutes by direct train; from Geneva roughly three hours. The station is also a hub for boats: lake steamers depart from directly outside, which is a scenic way to reach the mountain bases.

When to visit

Lucerne works year-round, with a milder climate than the high Alpine resorts:

What to do

Chapel Bridge & Water Tower

The Kapellbrücke is Lucerne's emblem — a covered wooden footbridge across the Reuss, originally built in 1332, making it one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. A 1993 fire damaged much of it, and it was rebuilt to its original form. The octagonal Water Tower (Wasserturm) beside it is older still and survived the fire.

Mount Pilatus

The classic excursion is the "Golden Round Trip": a boat across the lake to Alpnachstad, up the world's steepest cogwheel railway to Pilatus Kulm (around 2,120 m), then down by aerial cableway and panorama gondolas to Kriens, and a bus back into the city. Local legend ties the mountain to dragons.

Mount Rigi

Known as the "Queen of the Mountains," Rigi (summit Rigi Kulm, 1,798 m) is reached by boat plus Europe's oldest mountain railway. The summit gives a 360° panorama over Lake Lucerne and, on clear days, far across the Swiss plateau.

The old town & the lake

Beyond the bridges, the car-light old town has painted facades, medieval squares and a stretch of preserved city wall with towers. A lake cruise from the station quay is one of the simplest, most rewarding things to do here.
