Zurich is Switzerland's largest city, set where the River Limmat flows out of Lake Zurich, in the north of the country. It's the financial and cultural hub — a compact, walkable place that pairs a medieval old town with a polished, modern energy, and it's home to Switzerland's largest airport. For many travellers it's the first stop in the country and an easy base for day trips.
Here's what to know before booking: how to get there (including from the airport), when to go, and where to stay — with a live price comparison to find your room.

Getting to Zurich
Zurich Airport (Flughafen Zürich, in Kloten, about 9 km north of the centre) is Switzerland's main international gateway. The S-Bahn runs from the airport's underground platforms to the main station, Zurich HB, in roughly 10–12 minutes. HB is itself one of Europe's busiest stations, with direct trains across Switzerland and to neighbouring countries. In the city, an efficient network of trams, buses, S-Bahn and lake ferries makes a car unnecessary — the Zürich Card covers all of it, including the trip in from the airport.
When to visit
- Summer (June–August): warm and lively — lakeside swimming at the public "badis," boat cruises, outdoor dining. Best for the water, but the busiest.
- Spring & autumn: mild and pleasant for walking the old town and museums, generally better value.
- Winter: cool with festive markets; the city stays fully active, and the ski areas of eastern Switzerland are within reach by train.
What to do
The Old Town (Altstadt)
The historic heart straddles both banks of the Limmat: a maze of medieval lanes, painted facades and small squares. Key sights include the twin-towered Grossmünster, the Fraumünster with its Chagall stained-glass windows, and the Lindenhof hill — a quiet park on the site of a Roman fort, with a classic view over the rooftops and river. The lively Niederdorf quarter on the east bank is pedestrian and full of cafés and bars.
Bahnhofstrasse & the lake
The Bahnhofstrasse, about 1.4 km long, runs from the main station down to Lake Zurich and is one of the world's most exclusive shopping streets — worth a stroll even without buying. It ends at Bürkliplatz on the lakefront, where boat cruises depart. A short lake trip toward Kilchberg reaches the Lindt Home of Chocolate.
Uetliberg
Zurich's "home mountain" rises to about 871 m right at the city's edge. The S10 train climbs from the main station in roughly 20–25 minutes, and from the observation tower there's a sweeping view over the city, the lake and — on clear days — the Alps.
Museums & day trips
The Swiss National Museum sits by the main station, and the Kunsthaus and FIFA Museum are city highlights. Zurich is also a strong base for day trips: the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen, Lucerne, Rapperswil by boat, and Winterthur are all easy by train.

Where in the city to stay
Zurich is compact, so most areas keep you within easy reach of the centre. The main choices:
- Old Town / Niederdorf: the most atmospheric base — medieval streets, restaurants and nightlife, walkable to everything.
- Near the main station (HB): the most practical if you're planning day trips, since trains leave for all directions; also handy from the airport.
- Lakefront (Enge / Seefeld): calmer, with lake views and easy access to the water.
- Zurich West: the former industrial district, now design hotels, food halls and a younger, modern scene.
Zurich is consistently among Europe's more expensive cities, so room rates run high — but the range is wide, from hostels and guesthouses to design and luxury hotels. The comparison below pulls live rates for your dates.
