Basel sits in the far northwest of Switzerland on a bend of the Rhine, at the Dreiländereck — the corner where Switzerland, Germany and France meet. It's Switzerland's third-largest city (around 178,000 people) and widely regarded as the country's art and culture capital: home to the Art Basel fair, some forty museums, a medieval old town and a red-sandstone Münster above the river. It's a walkable, low-key city with a strong creative streak and an unmistakably international feel.

Getting to Basel
Basel is a major rail hub: the journey from Zurich takes about an hour, and Bern around the same, with fast connections on to Paris (TGV) and across Germany. Note the city has two main stations — Basel SBB (Swiss side) and Basel Badischer Bahnhof (run by German railways) — so check which one your ticket uses. The shared EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, just over the French border, brings in flights from across Europe. In town, trams and buses are excellent, and overnight guests get the BaselCard, which includes free local transport and museum discounts.
When to visit
- Spring & early summer: mild and pleasant for the old town and riverside; Art Basel (usually June) fills the city — book hotels far ahead and expect higher rates.
- Summer (July–August): warm enough to join locals floating down the Rhine; lively riverbanks and long evenings.
- Fasnacht (late winter): the famous carnival begins at 4am with the Morgestraich — a unique, atmospheric time, but accommodation is tight.
- Autumn & Advent: quieter and good value, with one of Switzerland's most charming Christmas markets in December.
What to do
The museums
Basel's museum density is its calling card. The Kunstmuseum Basel holds the world's oldest public art collection (open since 1661) and is the largest art museum in Switzerland. Out in Riehen, the Fondation Beyeler is one of Europe's finest modern-art galleries, while the playful Museum Tinguely celebrates the kinetic sculptor Jean Tinguely on the riverbank. In all, the city and surroundings count around forty museums.
Old town & the Münster
The medieval old town climbs from the river to the Marktplatz with its bright-red Rathaus (town hall). Above the Rhine stands the Basler Münster, a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral in red sandstone with twin towers and a terrace view over the river and rooftops. Narrow lanes, fountains and squares make the centre a pleasure to wander on foot.
The Rhine
The river is part of daily life here. Four little ferries cross it powered only by the current, and in summer locals pack their belongings into a waterproof Wickelfisch bag and swim or float downstream with the gentle current — one of the most distinctive city experiences in Switzerland.
Art Basel & Fasnacht
Two events define Basel's calendar: Art Basel, the world's leading contemporary-art fair, draws galleries and collectors each June; and the Basler Fasnacht carnival — recognised by UNESCO — turns the old town into three days and nights of lanterns, piccolos and satirical costume from the early-morning Morgestraich.

Where to stay
Basel is compact and easy to cover on foot or by tram. The main choices:
- Grossbasel (old town / left bank): the classic base — by the Marktplatz, the Münster, museums and main shopping streets, walkable to everything.
- Around Basel SBB station: handy for arrivals and trams, with plenty of business and mid-range hotels a short ride from the centre.
- Kleinbasel (right bank): the livelier, more relaxed side across the river, with riverside bars and easy tram links back to the old town.
Basel runs from hostels and functional business hotels to design and grand five-star addresses; rates spike sharply during Art Basel and major trade fairs, so dates matter a lot here. The comparison below pulls live rates for your dates.
